Muslims to protest in KZN

Muslims in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal are expected take to the streets in protest this week adding their voices to the global outrage sparked by the blasphemous film, Innocence of Muslims, which depicts the Prophet Muhammed (saw) in a vile manner.

A protest directed to the American embassy in the CBD has been scheduled for Friday October, 5 2012 from the Grey Street Jummah Masjid.

Thousands of Muslims around the world have peacefully protested over the
last three weeks to express their anger and pain caused by the film
described as one of the most deeply insulting depictions of the most revered
figure in Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

The protest is organized by the Lajpaal Foundation based in Asherville,
Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Organizers maintained that it will be an absolutely peaceful protest.

Last Friday a similar protest took place outside the US consulate in
Sandton, Johannesburg.

Hundreds of Muslims gathered with placards and chanted slogans in praise of
the Prophet Muhammed (saw). A memorandum was also handed over to the US consulate.
Organisers of the Durban rally say they aim to show the world that Muslims can protest peacefully and stand up for their religious rights. “Please show your support by sacrificing this Friday afternoon for Islam,” they have urged.

A very dismal turn-out at the protest march today
in Durban – which makes no sense at all.

Only a matter of days before this march, another
such protest march was very well-attended here in Durban. And there have
been a number of other marches on Muslim issues that had a better turn-out.
In fact, only a few years ago when there was a protest march on the very
same issue i.e. denigration of the Prophet (S.A.W) through the medium of
cartoon caricatures, there was a good turn-out by the Muslim community of
Durban. There was no difference – the same cause, and the same circumstances
under which the march was held, namely a Friday, and after Juma.

Only this time, the organisers were different.
A large part of the Durban muslim community does not identify with this type of organisation. And so, the usually enthusiastic crowd that would
readily turn up for such marches, stayed away in their numbers today.

It was not so much about the noble cause of the
Prophet (S.A.W), but about one’s allegiances to the type of organisation that
you identify with.

It even
seems that the detractors already took a position against the march, and then
looked around to get their position sanctioned from an ulema body that would be
most likely to disapprove. Once they got the desired fatwa disapproving
of the march, they circulated this via e-mail to run down the planned protest.
Well, this fatwa should apply equally to the other marches as well which enjoy a better turn-out. Why the hypocrisy ?
