There were positive developments in the murder case of Ventersdorp resident,
Mohammed Fayaz Kazi over the weekend.
Two suspects are in custody and are appearing in the Krugersdorp magistrates
court today.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila said that both suspects are
charged with murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The news of the double arrests was received with thanks by the family
members of the deceased. Marhoom Kazi’s wife commented on the Cii Facebook page stating: “Shukr. Now let the justice system take its course and bring my husband’s murderers to jail.”
27-year-old Muhammad Fayaaz Kazi and his 33-year-old uncle, Anser Mahmood were en route to Ventersdorp on Monday when they stopped in Magaliesberg to get some food for their iftar, the fast breaking evening meal.
After purchasing some food from a fast food outlet an argument allegedly
broke out between Kazi and unknown Afrikaner males. Kazi passed away as result of the attack early on Tuesday morning.
Police arrested a 27 year old suspect late on Saturday night while the
second suspect handed himself over to police on Sunday.
“On Saturday evening we arrested the 27 year old man from Rustenburg and the 33 year old man we went to his house and place of work, he handed himself
over to police in presence of his legal representative,” Malila said.
He further said that the support from the Magaliesburg community assisted
the investigations tremendously.
“The community was up in arms and gave their full support this helped us in
apprehending the 2 suspects,” Malila said.
Aside to the criminal investigation which is continuing, an internal police
inquiry has been initiated to ascertain whether police reacted suitably to
the incident.
“The two victims said they don’t want to press charges, they said they will
apply their minds if they want to press charges they will do it at a later
stage so obviously police could not do anything because charges were not
opened,” Malila explained.
But Malila said there is an inquiry to see whether correct protocol had been
adhered too.
“Police told them if you change your mind, the police station is 200 meters away but the victims went to police station but did not file charges (at the
time)” he said.
