The petition set up by civil society organisation, Open Shuhada Street in support of SOuth African Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies’ call to re-label goods from the occupied West Bank correctly, has reached over 5000 signatures.

New signatures can be added until tomorrow in line with the deadline for public submission to the notice by Davies.

Products emanating from the OPT are currently being labeled as “Made in Israel.”

Open Shuhada Street has used Avaaz.com as a platform for the petition and is requesting support from the public to sign this petition.

Open Shuhada Street’s, Jonathan Docknee, said he remains hopeful that they will reach the 10 000 signatures target.

“We support the notice and efforts to make it law,” he told Cii’s breakfast show, Sabaahul Khair.

Davies issued the notice of intention 60 days ago (from tomorrow) and opened it up to the public for comment.

“This law has to pass. It is in line with international and South African consumer law,” Docknee said.

He said there was a lot of hard work involved in motivating the case to call for the relabeling. “It is very a sensitive issue, you get very extreme reactions,” he explained.

People who have not signed the petition may still do so, by visiting www.openshuhadastreet.org or clicking here.
