Winter has officially begun in Johannesburg, ushered in by a 4 degree morning thisWednesday. Electric blankets, heaters and hot water bottles have been taken out in many homes as the chill creeps in.

Temperatures are expected to plummet while there are many homeless and underprivileged South Africans who are forced to face the callous winter without any assistance and warmth.

The Africa Muslim Agency (AMA) together with Channel Islam International (Cii) as its media partner are in the midst of their Winter Warmth Campaign.

AMA has contacted 76 organizations who are responsible for the various communities with regards to the distribution of the winter warmth packs.

“The 76 organizations will now complete a list of people whom they are responsible for in their communities and give the list to us,” AMA spokesperson, Imraan Amod, said.

AMA will then ensure that there is no duplication in the lists.

Collection for the campaign is continuing and AMA is taking the initiative to schools and various organisations.

“We feel that it is the responsibility of the communities to take care of the communities that are underprivileged,” Amod said.

From the target of the 10 000 AMA has already purchased 5000 winter warmth packs with their own reserves in a preemptive effort to speed up the campaign.

“Where that money is going to come from is the main question. People need to donate towards this,” Amod said.
